Arbella Insurance appoints Joe Murphy and Brian O’Dwyer to its Board of Directors

– USA, MA – The Arbella Insurance Group is pleased to announce the appointments of Joseph G. Murphy, former Massachusetts Commissioner of Insurance, and Brian O’Dwyer, senior partner at O’Dwyer & Bernstein, LLP, to its Board of Directors. Both Murphy and O’Dwyer bring a vast understanding of the legislative and regulatory issues facing the insurance industry today.

As Massachusetts’ Insurance Commissioner from 2010-2014, Murphy played an active role in the implementation of auto insurance reform, stabilizing health insurance costs for individuals and small businesses, and ensuring the solvency of Massachusetts-based insurers. Prior to his appointment, Murphy served as First Deputy Commissioner, with oversight of the day-to-day operations of the Division. “As Insurance Commissioner, I was very familiar with Arbella,” said Murphy. “They are a service oriented carrier and have performed well in this very competitive market. I am excited to be a part of their board.” As Commissioner, Murphy was active in the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (“NAIC”), the Government Relations Leadership Council, Property and Casualty Insurance Committee, Antifraud Task Force, the National Insurance Producer Registry Board of Directors and the International Insurance Relations Leadership Group.

“Arbella is very fortunate to be adding a director with such a strong background in regulatory and legislative issues that impact the insurance industry,” said John Donohue, chairman, president and CEO of the Arbella Insurance Group. “Joe’s tenure as Insurance Commissioner gave him invaluable insights into the issues facing insurance companies in an ever-evolving business climate, which will bring a good perspective to the board.”

A Senior Partner at O’Dwyer & Bernstein, LLP in New York, O’Dwyer has more than 40 years of experience in Labor Relations, Employee Benefits, Personal Injury, and General Litigation. An advocate for immigrants’ rights, O’Dwyer founded the Emerald Isle Immigration Center, which is the largest Irish immigrant center and advocacy group in the United States. O’Dwyer has also worked extensively in the political arena, concentrating largely on promoting Irish and Irish-American interests. He served as national chairman of Irish-Americans for Clinton-Gore in 1992 and 1996 and Irish-Americans for Gore in 2000, and was a founding member of both the National Democratic Ethnic Coordinating Committee and Irish American Democrats. “I am very familiar with Arbella. I’m confident that my regulatory background in the insurance sector will be beneficial and I look forward to being a part of its very dedicated and tenured board,” said O’Dwyer.

“From his litigation background to his extensive regulatory activities, both at the state and federal level, Brian has been involved in numerous important insurance issues throughout his 40 year career,” added Donohue. “I’m confident he’ll bring a strong perspective and knowledge to the board.”
