St.Galler Kantonalbank announces Dr. Christian Schmid as next Chairman of the Executive Board

– SWITZERLAND, St. Gallen –  St.Galler Kantonalbank today announced that its Board of Directors appointed Dr. Christian Schmid as Chairman of the Executive Board effective as of 1st May 2021, succeeding Roland Ledergerber.

“The Board of Directors is convinced that with Christian Schmid the best candidate will be entrusted with the management of St.Galler Kantonalbank. He has all the skills needed to further develop the bank, while at the same time ensuring appropriate continuity in management”. said Thomas Gutzwiller, Chairman of the Board of Directors.

As announced in February 2020, Roland Ledergerber will retire after 18 years on the Executive Board. On 5 May 2021, he will be proposed for election to the Board of Directors at the General Meeting of St.Galler Kantonalbank. After one year as a full member of the Board of Directors, it is planned to recommend Roland Ledergerber to the 2022 General Meeting of Shareholders for election as successor to Chairman Thomas Gutzwiller.

About Christian Schmid

Dr. Christian Schmid has been a member of the Executive Board and Head of the Corporate Center of St.Galler Kantonalbank since August 2008. In this role, he is responsible for the Corporate Development, Human Resources, Controlling & Finance, Legal & Compliance and Risk Office departments.

Prior to that, he was Managing Director of RSN Risk Solution Network AG from 2004 to 2008 and built it into the leading outsourcing platform for credit risk management in Switzerland.

From 1999 to 2003, Christian Schmid already held management positions for the St.Galler Kantonalbank in the area of private and business customers. Before joining St.Galler Kantonalbank, he worked at the Swiss Institute for Banking and Finance at the University of St.Gallen.

Christian Schmid studied at the University of St.Gallen and received his doctorate (Dr. oec. HSG) in 2003.

Christian Schmid has profound knowledge of the banking business and many years of management experience. As a member of the Executive Board, he has strongly influenced the strategy and development of the St.Galler Kantonalbank over the past 12 years.
