– USA, WA DC – The Lupus Foundation of America, the only national force devoted to solving the mystery of lupus, announced the election of two new directors to its national board of directors. They are: Joseph Arnold of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Kathleen Ruiz of New York City. Arnold and Ruiz, along with the other members of the board, will provide organizational leadership for the Foundation’s strategic initiatives to bring national attention and increased public and private resources to lupus, an unpredictable and misunderstood autoimmune disease that ravages different parts of the body.

Joseph Arnold is a partner in the Philadelphia office of the law firm of Gordon & Rees LLP. He recently completed a two-year term as chair of the board of directors of the Lupus Foundation of America, Philadelphia Tri-State Chapter. Arnold is active in lupus advocacy and through fundraising initiatives, raising tens of thousands of dollars annually. Arnold also performs pro bono legal services for the Support Center for Child Advocates in Philadelphia and spent many years volunteering as a basketball coach in the youth and college ranks.
“My involvement with the Foundation spans decades going back to when I was a teenager,” said Arnold. “It is an honor for me to serve on the national board of directors, as we work to accelerate the pace of lupus research and ensure all communities are educated about lupus and have access to the services and support they need.”

Kathleen Ruiz is Senior Vice President, Vendor & Store Marketing and & Public Relations for Saks Fifth Avenue. Ruiz has built a distinguished public relations career spanning more than 25 years and possesses an extensive background in retail, marketing, special events, public relations, and social media. She previously has served as member of the board for the Florida Grand Opera.

“Saks Fifth Avenue has a long-standing relationship with the Lupus Foundation of America,” said Ruiz. “I look forward to taking on this new hands-on role in the organization and utilizing my public relations experience to help the Foundation enhance its brand and bring greater attention and awareness to lupus.”
The Lupus Foundation of America is pleased to welcome both Arnold and Ruiz to the board of directors as their personal and professional experiences with the organization will be a great asset to future Foundation initiatives.
About Lupus
Lupus is an unpredictable and misunderstood autoimmune disease that ravages different parts of the body. It is difficult to diagnose, hard to live with and a challenge to treat. Lupus is a cruel mystery because it is hidden from view and undefined, has a range of symptoms, strikes without warning, and has no known cause and no known cure. Its health effects can range from a skin rash to a heart attack. Lupus is debilitating and destructive and can be fatal, yet research on lupus has not kept pace with research for other diseases of similar scope and devastation.
