Anthem elects its CEO, Joe Swedish to the additional role of Chairman of the Board of Directors

– USA, IN – Anthem, Inc. (NYSE: ANTM) today announced that the Anthem Board of Directors has elected President and Chief Executive Officer Joseph R. Swedish to the additional role of Chairman of the Board, effective December 9, 2015. Swedish succeeds George A. Schaefer, Jr., who will continue on the board and serve as independent Lead Director.

Mr. Swedish joined Anthem in March 2013. Amidst a rapidly changing health care landscape, Mr. Swedish led the evolution of Anthem to become America’s valued health partner and has continued to advance Anthem’s strategy to position the company for long-term success. Under the leadership of Mr. Swedish, Anthem has outperformed financial expectations for nine consecutive quarters with operating revenue growing 20% to more than $73 billion. Most recently, Mr. Swedish led Anthem’s effort to enter into a definitive agreement to acquire Cigna Corporation. This acquisition, which is expected to close in the second half of 2016, will create the premiere health services company with approximately 53 million medical members and, most importantly, will deliver meaningful value to consumers through enhanced access to quality, affordable healthcare.

“During his tenure at Anthem, Joe has built a strong record of success through a commitment to leadership, vision and innovation,” said Mr. Schaefer. “His accomplishments are even more notable given the highly transformative state of healthcare today. This additional appointment serves to recognize Joe’s significant achievements in leading Anthem and reflects the board’s confidence in Joe’s leadership moving forward as we work to ensure the successful integration of the Cigna business and following the close of the acquisition.”
